        the hat flutters its constant eyelids
so as not to be mistaken for a nightcap
        which is altogether an inferior object

        the hat is king of the stormy sea
wherever it sets its brim
        the awful waves bow

        when the house is asleep
the hat rattles its pagan chains
        and goes out for a good blocking

        souls of poets dead and gone
perfume the hat's lining
        with the grease of passion

        many a verse I hope to write
before the hat gets too stressed
        with love spangles
