From a medical and scientific standpoint the digit seven is a signal point of calculation. The entire system is wholly transformed every seven years: there are seven stages of prenatal existence, the brain takes seven forms before assuming its unique character, and go on. Throughout history the number seven has played a determining role: how many are the races of man, his wonders, planets, days, colours, minerals, senses; how manyfold is each of the three parts of the body, how ply the shooter's little natural, or the divisions of the world? Say, to which number does the Bible accord greatest importance? Say then no more.

Take that the entire system suffers heptadic change. These alternate sevens resemble the functional changes of the body. A child slight at seven is likely also to be so at twenty-one, whereas a hulking seven will again be hale at twenty-one, no matter how frail the intermediate years. It follows that every line on the hand can be divided into sections giving dates with more or less accuracy.

Paramount, however, and most usually consulted in reference to dates, are life and fate. Observe how the line of fate comprises three great divisions at twenty-one, thirty-five, and forty-nine, and from this build the very life-grid. Note down the class or type of hand before proceeding or attempting the smallest. It stands to reason that there must be variation between hands of the different destinies. Bear this in mind, and skew in accordance with the life of the palm. Mentally to characterize and age the lines as shown you will find simplest and most accurate.

Use life and fate together, and they corroborate to specify the events. It is therefore not difficult, after a little practice, to tell when an illness or an event took place, or when such and such a thing will happen, be it a party, outrage or a death. Practice brings perfection in all things; let not the student be discouraged, therefore, if at first he finds difficulty in dividing the lives into divisions and subdivisions. Such things take time.
